Not a book I would share with my kids at bedtime, but an addictive fix I would steal away to read when the opportunity availed itself. Not just another hacknayed, good vs. evil cookie cutter. East coast vs. La La Land, Hedge fund "reality" vs. the mean streets of the have-nots. The inherent evil that can erupt inside any person. Plus, some marvelously fun factoids about that chaotic, bygone time in history. Thanks Greg, write another.
I enjoyed Greg's book. It was a real page turner as I was impatient to find out what came next. The descriptions of LA during the riots brought back my recollections of being in So.Cal. when the King verdict was announced. Frightening. Also, you end up learning a lot about Tae Kwon Do with the author's vivid explanations of the training process and sparing action. There is also a tense trip over the boarder into Tijuana with the type of back alley violence you would expect. Definitely a fun read, I recommend this book to anyone who likes a fast paced escape into fiction that is set in a real life context.
I just finished Greg Curhan's book last night. It was so exciting that I read it in just two days. Set in LA during the Rodney King riots, the book intersperses Tae Kwon Do white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown, and black belt training with the current real life situation. Max Singer must rescue his girlfriend from thugs during the riots. Quite a few dead bodies, and tough situations keep the adrenaline level high. The action continues right up to the end.
This is a thriller set in Los Angeles during the Rodney King riots. Hero is stock trader and martial arts student, but with some believable weaknesses, ie, tension under stress, which he controls with martial arts training. His girlfriend is a teacher in Watts, but is kidnapped during the riots and held for ransom. The boyfriend, Max, enlists several fellow martial arts experts and goes after her. Mayhem ensues, including a final battle when the girl actually nails the villain, not Max. Well written, well plotted, the Kung Fu parts seem decent and not overdone, and the fighters seem at times all too mortal. And the woman seems believable, always a hard thing for a male writer to pull off. Highly recommended.
Entertaining read with a unique main character and storyline. Enjoyed the structure that flip flopped between time periods to provide insight into why particular events were transpiring.
Very much looking forward to Curhan's next novel!
